Of Things Nautical
When I began to make photographs of the fishing boats and other vessels based out of Eureka, CA, more than four years ago, I knew I wanted to capture the details of the individual parts of the equipment and boats that defined the spirit of the vessels of this very Northern California port.
Although I have made more formal portraits of boats, it was simply much more significant to me to step in closer and capture the signatures made by salt water, wind, and sweat on wooden decks and exposed metal.
I felt no need to identify each image. This was not an encyclopedic project, rather it was a visceral response. Better to allow each viewer to establish his or her own understanding and connection to the subject. |
